Music Style

  • Acoustic folk and rock (50’s to Present) covers and originals (see play list). Performance abilities range from laid back, easy listening to Jimmy Buffet style music to Country to Rock and Progressive. Original works also range widely in style. Have ability to learn requested songs for special events and occasions.

  • Folk University was created as a result of its founding member's roots as a single acoustic guitar singer/songwriter with heavy influences from the Folk and Rock music of the 60's and 70's. Upon growing from a single to a duo to a trio, the Folk University name seemed to fit the bill.

Experience

  • Group formed in 1990 as Twitty & Naja. Expanded group and evolved into Folk University in 1998.
  • Mike entertained as a solo acoustic artist during college at UF while Dave lead a 50's band known as the Coastliners. John is a veteran percussionist and accomplished teacher. John and his wife (Sheri) own and operate Excel Music, a music school seeking to provide superior musical education to aspiring musicians of all ages, in north Tampa.
  • Have entertained at various indoor and outdoor events, college functions, philanthropy benefits, corporate functions, grand openings, hospitals, universities, restaurants, bars, and private parties and weddings around the state. No venue too large or too small.
  • Larger local venues have included the Thunderdome/Tropicana Field (St. Petersburg, FL), the O’Connell Center (Gainesville, FL) and park venues such as Coachman Park (Clearwater, FL). Have opened for entertainers such as Dennis Miller, Bertie Higgins and Jim Stafford. John has performed on television, at the White House, major headline rooms in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe, and in front of crowds of up to 50,000 people.
